Shot blasting, also referred to as abrasive blasting, is a generic term denoting the process of refining, sculpting, and cleansing a solid surface by propelling solid particles across it at high velocities. This method bears a resemblance to using sandpaper but results in a more uniform finish, eliminating issues at corners or in hard-to-reach areas. Shot blasting can occur naturally, often through wind-borne particles causing aeolian erosion, or artificially, employing compressed air.

Typically, shot blasting equipment comprises a chamber where shot and air are combined. This blend is then directed through a handheld nozzle to propel particles onto the surface or workpiece. Nozzles are available in various shapes, sizes, and materials, with boron carbide being a favoured choice due to its resistance to abrasive wear.
